India Finish Fourth With 85 Asian Games Medals

NAGOYA — India finished the Asian Games in Nagoya with 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, ending the campaign in fourth place. The tally fell well short of the 106 medals India won at the Hangzhou Asian Games, with the country’s gold count also dropping from 28 to 21.

The biggest concern was the decline in gold medals. India retained only eight of its 28 gold medals from Hangzhou, with several strong performances from shooting and athletics not repeated in Nagoya. India had won seven shooting golds and six athletics golds at Hangzhou.

India’s campaign was slow in the early stages, with only 10 gold medals coming in the first 12 days. The team, however, produced a strong finish, winning 11 gold medals over the final two days — six on Friday and five on Saturday — to secure fourth place.

The late surge was led by several key performances. India won five gold medals in archery and three in boxing, while wrestling and hockey contributed two each. The men’s cricket team also won gold, while the men’s hockey team retained its title with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia in the final.

The overall medal tally, however, does not make the campaign a complete disappointment. India continued to win medals across several disciplines, although its athletics tally fell from 29 medals at Hangzhou to 24 in Nagoya. Wrestling also produced six medals, including two golds.

Still, compared with the record-breaking performance in Hangzhou, Nagoya exposed a clear decline in India’s ability to convert strong performances into gold medals. The late rush of victories lifted India’s final position, but the gap from the 106-medal haul in Hangzhou remains a significant talking point as the country looks ahead to future international competitions.
