Ireland: Visitor jailed for taking Irish rental car. The turning point was that the car was caught speeding in the incident. Björn Erland Twetter (41) refused to return the car after the company, contacted him when he was warned that the car had been caught speeding in Holland.
But he told them he needed it and was going to hold it for a few months. This was reported to the police in Norway and asked to surrender but refused. Phone and email contact with Twitter continued, but the car was flagged as stolen and recovered by police in Norway.
Given an address in County Kildare, Ireland, the car was taken and driven away using a fake rental agreement taken out between November 10 and 25, 2020. He has previous convictions for drug offenses in Norway and Sweden.
He was extradited to Ireland in January after his journey from Spain to Gibraltar was blocked, the court heard. He has been in custody since then.
His client, who works as a telecom engineer, used his real name, driver's license and bank card but used the address he did not live in on the rental agreement.
He said he initially paid the company 1,500 euros for the 12-month lease and at a later stage paid 3,500 euros from his credit card. His lawyer argued that there is only an additional liability of 1200 euros. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard he had driven 9,000 miles on the car.
She said she had been dealing with the man she rented the car from and believed he had let her take the car out. He was sentenced to 12 months with the final nine months suspended and the case was adjourned to January 13, 2023. The company sent a contractor to bring the car back.
