It's summer, and many people may benefit from the fact that the Passport Service is finally trying to catch up if they can't move forward.
The Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Martin TD and Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys TD yesterday (Friday 28 April) announced a number of improvements to the passport online system in response to increased passport renewal traffic in Ireland.
- Eircode lookup feature for addresses in Ireland
- Children born in Ireland no longer need to send their birth certificates to their parents
- Check list facility for first time applications for citizenship
The first phase is only for those below 18 years of age and those applying online for the first time. Phase 2 will extend to (i) other birth groups, (ii) marriage verification when a person changes name on marriage, and (iii) death verification, Gender recognition certificates and adoption certificates are not accessible through the API.
So far Ireland has received 380,000 applications and 148,000 in January alone, the second busiest month. The new changes will now arrive to help speed up the process for first-time applications and renewals.
What are the new changes? What are the new improvements introduced?
- Applicants can request and securely receive birth certificates from the GRO database. Must be a child's first online application
- They were born in Ireland and the birth was registered with the GRO
- A PPSN is assigned
- The applicant is under joint guardianship as stated in the birth certificate or has been granted single guardianship by court order.
Other changes in the online portal,
The Passport Service will allow passport applicants to use information provided by first-time applicants to automatically generate a cover sheet of documents that passport applicants must submit as part of their application.
An Eircode lookup feature has also been introduced that will allow citizens to prepopulate address fields as part of their online application.
Many mistakes cause delays in passport applications. That means, according to them, there are several common mistakes people make during the application process that cause their application to be delayed. New improvements focus on the most complex areas. Applicants sending documentation are advised to read the instructions carefully, follow them and ensure that everything is included. Children's photographs and parentage are a common mistake made by passport applicants, and the Irish Passport Service website has videos to help them get it right.
You can renew or apply for your first passport online. The Passport Service usually does not require any supporting documents for these applications. Online is a very fast process. All applications are processed within approximately eight weeks. 370,000 passports have been distributed so far this year.
- Online Simple Senior Renewal - 10 working days
- Online Child/Complex Adult Renewal - 15 working days
- Online first time application, adult or child - 20 working days
- One post, adult or child, first time or by renewal - 8 weeks
