Its first steps will begin in Australia. Millions of Australians' Gmail accounts will be deleted from December 2023 as the tech giant implements a new security system.

On Friday, July 21st, Google announced that it will begin implementing a new policy to delete Gmail accounts that have been inactive for two years.

"We are updating the inactivity period for a Google Account across all of our products and services to two years," Google said on Friday.

This scheme, which is currently being implemented in Australia, may become applicable to all accounts in the future. So, if you want to continue using accounts that are not actively used, please note the following. It also lists other ways you can ensure your account is secure.

These include:

  • Read or send an email
  • Doing a Google search
  • Using Google Drive
  • Watching a YouTube video
  • Downloading an app on the Google Play Store
  • Sign in with Google to sign in to a third-party app

You should also ensure that you sign in regularly to ensure that your account is secure in the future.
