Manipur: The Kuki-Zo community is protesting Meitei demands for reserved public job quotas and college admissions as a form of affirmative action, stoking long-held fears that they might also be allowed to acquire land in areas currently reserved for tribal groups.
The main accused's house was set on fire after a video emerged of two women being stripped naked by a mob. Two days after the video was released, the assailants set fire to the house on Friday. People burnt the house of the arrested Suspect. The main suspect, identified as Khuirem Herodas, a Meitei, was arrested on Thursday hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed public.
The accused's house was set on fire by people including women. The video shows two women being stripped naked by a mob in Manipur's Kangpokpi district.
The 26-second video sparked a nationwide protest. The communal riots broke out in the northeastern state on May 3. The footage came out on Wednesday after two months.
After the internet ban was lifted, the video went viral. Meanwhile, the Manipur police has voluntarily registered a case against the video. Abduction against them at Nongpok Sekmai Police Station in Thoubal district on Wednesday night.
A case was registered for gang rape and murder. According to official sources, four people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Among those arrested today one cadre of PREPAK Pro namely Md Ibungo @ Abdul Hilim (38 yrs) s/o (L) Tomba Khan of Khumidok Epum Mapan Imphal East,a leader of the People's Revolutionary Party of Kanglipak (PREPAK) was arrested by Imphal East District Police.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Thursday that a thorough investigation is going on in the incident and strict action will be taken including death penalty.
Many people were injured in the violence. The conflict broke out in Manipur after the Meitei sect demanded reservation. The Naga and Kuki tribal groups opposed the reservation to the Meitei community, which accounts for 53 percent of Manipur's population. Only 40 percent of Manipur's population is tribal.
