Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy (Congress Party) who lived among the people for hours, and years the state bid farewell.
The funeral procession carrying the body of Oommen Chandy reached the church from Tirunakkara to the house in Vallakal and then to the church accompanied by a huge crowd. Kottayam, which gave Oommenchandy a leader to Kerala, gave the popular hero an unparalleled journey. Tirunakkara became a sea of people when tens of thousands flocked from all over Kerala.
Thousands of civilians offered tearful tributes to the leader who refused ceremonial fireworks and official honours. Leaders including Rahul Gandhi were part of the mourning procession. Chandi Oommen, Oommen Chandy's son, thanked everyone after the funeral at the church.
After about 28 hours, the influx of people from five districts reached Kottayam Tirunakkara at 11.00 am. Literally, a crowd could be seen unmoved along Tirunakkara and on the way to Puthupally, kerala.
Political leaders and stars were waiting at Thirunakkara to send off the leader who always gave power to others. The crowd, who had been waiting since yesterday, poured in with handfuls of flowers and memories.
Even when the authorities strictly ended the three-and-a-half-hour long public darshan at 2:30 in the afternoon, about twice as many people stayed outside.
After the prayer at the Puthupally homestead, many people also visited the construction site of the new house. People stood by as the leader's body was taken to the mosque after prayers at home. Oommen Chandy's demise was a proof that people will not forget a leader who stands with the people.
