Around 62,000 students who took the exam in Ireland received their Leaving Certificate results today.
2023 was the first official exam for candidates to appear after the Junior Cert was cancelled due to the pandemic. 61,736 results were received this morning, including 58,006 Leaving Cert students and 3,730 Leaving Cert Applied applicants. This year's grades indicate a record-breaking result in "fairness" for students over recent years.
The SEC said the initial marking of the examination papers revealed that the results were lower across the board compared to the unadjusted marks of 2022.
Education Minister Norma Foley says the results for the class of 2023 will not be lower than last year. Minister Foley had directed the SEC to ensure that the overall set of Leaving Certificate results in 2023, should not be less than 2022 overall.
This year's post-marking adjustment is much higher than that applied to last year's results. An average increase of 5.6% over last year's mark. The average increase this year is 7.9%, and 71% of all grades received are up from 50% last year. A total of 14 percent students have secured H1 grades at higher level this year. The State Examinations Commission said that this year's basic aggregate results are much lower than those of 2022, which necessitates a strong adjustment.
The SEC points out that with the removal of some allowances granted to students in 2021 and 2022, the exam experience of students this year is closer to that of pre-pandemic years.
Students can access their results online or at school. Students will get their adjusted marks today but will be able to view their actual marks and see the adjustments made from next Tuesday.
Education Minister Norma Foley congratulated the Class of 2023 and their teachers, families and parents who "travelled with them". Higher Education Minister Simon Harris encouraged those receiving the results to take time to "enjoy this incredibly special moment". "Before the CAO issues its offers next week, I want to remind students that there are many pathways to their chosen studies and careers," said Minister Harris.
Grades increased by around 8% and many gained CAO points. Colleges may have to use random selection to select entrants to some high-demand, high-scoring courses because so many get high grades, university representatives say, the higher the grades, the harder it is to get into college.
