United States: A pill has been found for post-partum depression in women. One in eight new mothers in the U.S. suffers from postpartum depression, according to the CDC, and some researchers say the rate might be higher. The first pill to treat post-pregnancy depression will soon be available, after the Food and Drug Administration approved it Friday. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug psuranalone. Suranolone is a pill that has been reported to alleviate postpartum depression symptoms within three days. It is reported that the pills will hit the market this year.
Researchers say the drug can prevent depression, apathy, sadness, suicidal thoughts, and cognitive decline that can result from postpartum depression.
The medicine was evaluated to be effective at the end of the clinical trial conducted on 350 people. Findings suggest that medication can help manage intense and complex emotions. The effect of the drug lasts up to four weeks after the last dose.
The reports after the clinical trial say that the medication needs to be taken for several months and the changes are guaranteed by taking the medication continuously for two weeks. But the makers said some side effects such as dizziness, diarrhea, fatigue, colds and urinary tract infections may occur in those who take the pill.
