Bengaluru: The space agency has postponed plans to revive Vikram lander and Pragyan rover on the moon. ISRO did not receive a response from the Chandrayaan 3 mission after trying to wake up the lunar lander and rover.
At the end of planned mission operations, ISRO is continuing to try to communicate with the mission after trying to wake up the hardware, which had been sleeping in anticipation of the fourteen Earth-day long lunar night. The temperature was minus 180 degrees with no sunshine. ISRO was hoping that the lander and rover would wake up on the 22nd. ISRO informed that it has been changed to 23.
It was originally planned to reactivate both the spacecraft on the evening of 22 September, 2023, but due to some technical reasons, ISRO has now decided to postpone the attempt till September 23. This was informed by Nilesh Desai, Director of Space Application Center. .
The rover was planned to move 300 to 350 meters. But the rover can move only 105 meters. The Vikram lander soft landed on the moon on the evening of August 23. After sunset on the moon, the lander and rover went into sleeping mode.
The Hirakasa Agency has provided regular updates on their movements and discoveries and shared the images they have taken. As they slept, ISRO said that the duo had completed all their assignments, but ISRO expressed hope that they would wake up at the beginning of the next lunar day.
But former ISRO chief AS Kiran Kumar said this could not be guaranteed as night temperatures near the moon's south pole regularly drop to -200C to -250C (-328F to -418F) and batteries are not designed to function or function. ISRO said Vikram and Pragyan would remain on the moon as "India's lunar ambassadors" if they don't wake up.
