While the earlier name had a colonial legacy, Sri Vijaya Puram symbolises the victory achieved in our freedom struggle…
“Andaman and Nicobar Islands have an unparalleled place in our freedom struggle and history. The island region, which once served as a naval base for the Chola Empire, has today become a critical base for our strategic and developmental dreams,” said Amit Shah. The city is also famous for the Cellular Jail National Memorial, which was once the prison where many freedom fighters and other nationals were imprisoned, and will now be called "Sri Vijayapuram" by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
