Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the UK with the potential use of a new ballistic missile amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. According to PA Media, the missile, already used in Ukraine, has a range of "several thousand kilometres," raising concerns over its ability to strike targets as far as the UK.
The comments were directed at the US and the UK, both of whom have supplied advanced weaponry to Ukraine. The UK’s Storm Shadow missiles and the US’s ATACMS have been key in targeting Russian forces.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesperson called this the first use of such a long-range ballistic missile in Ukraine and criticized Russia for its escalation. "It only serves to strengthen our resolve and to ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to act in self-defence against Russia's reckless and illegal invasion," the statement said.
The new missile reportedly surpasses the range of the weapons supplied by the UK and US. With the distance from Moscow to London being around 2,500km, its capability to threaten the UK has become a major concern.
Russia has also claimed to have intercepted two British-made Storm Shadow missiles, citing debris found in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian incursions have been reported.
Defence Secretary John Healey revealed that the UK had been aware of Russia’s plans to deploy the missile but avoided disclosing operational details, emphasizing the importance of maintaining security. "Public debate on this only benefits President Putin," Healey said.
Addressing the House of Commons, Prime Minister Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Ukraine, dismissing Putin’s threats as reckless. He stated the UK’s support for Ukraine is in accordance with international law and aimed solely at self-defence.
In a show of solidarity, the UK’s armed forces chief recently visited Ukraine to discuss its military requirements, underscoring the UK’s continued support.
