A Russian drone attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy early Friday morning claimed two lives and left 12 others injured, according to regional authorities. The attack, which occurred around 5 a.m. (0300 GMT), caused significant damage to 12 apartment buildings, five private residences, a store, and three cars, as reported by the national police.
Sumy regional governor Volodymyr Artiukh stated that Russian forces had equipped the drones with shrapnel to target a densely populated area deliberately. "This weapon is used... exclusively (to kill) people," Artiukh said, highlighting scars on a damaged building to emphasize the attack's human cost. "Not for a facility, but in order to destroy more people."
Footage released by the Sumy regional military administration showed shattered windows, destroyed vehicles, and heavily damaged structures.
This assault comes amid a series of recent deadly strikes in the region. On Tuesday night, a drone attack on the small town of Hlukhiv killed 12 people, including a child. Additionally, a missile attack on Sumy on Sunday evening left 11 dead, 89 injured, and the city’s administrative center without power.
The Sumy region has faced relentless bombardment in recent weeks, with Russian forces targeting critical infrastructure and residential areas, leaving behind widespread devastation and loss of life.
