Thiruvananthapuram: Three cyclones surround India, Chance of heavy rain and thundershowers in coming days. Three cyclones are located in the south-eastern part of India.

 
A cyclonic trough exists over the Straits of Mannar and Sri Lanka, south Bengal and another in the central part of the Bay of Bengal. Apart from this, there is also a cyclonic trough in the center of the southern Arabian Sea. The Central Meteorological Department has informed that there is a possibility of light/moderate rain with thunder and lightning in Kerala for the next 5 days.

Heavy rains are also likely to occur at isolated places on November 5, 8 and 9. A young man from Nedumangad in Thiruvananthapuram was struck by lightning on Monday afternoon. The friend who was with him is undergoing treatment. After this, the Central Meteorological Department has issued a thunderstorm warning. 

Thunderstorms are dangerous. They cause great damage to human and animal life, electrical and communication networks and appliances connected to electrical conductors. Therefore, the public should take the following precautions from the time the cloud starts to be seen. Lightning may not always be visible, so do not hesitate to take such precautions. 

Precautions 

  • Move to a safe building immediately at the first sign of lightning. Staying in open areas increases the risk of lightning strikes. ∙ Keep windows and doors closed during periods of strong winds and thunderstorms. Stay away from doors and windows. Stay inside the building and try not to touch the wall or floor as much as possible. 
  • Unplug household appliances. Avoid proximity to electrical appliances during thunderstorms. 
  • Avoid using the telephone during thunderstorms. It is okay to use a mobile phone.
  • If the weather is cloudy, avoid playing outdoors and on the terrace, with children watching. Do not stand under trees during thunderstorms. Do not park vehicles under trees. 
  • Stay inside your vehicle during a thunderstorm. Don't stick your legs out. You will be safe inside the vehicle. Avoid traveling on vehicles like bicycles, bikes, tractors during thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe building until the thunderstorm ends. 
  • Do not go out to the terrace or yard during thunderstorms to collect clothes when you see rain. Tie down objects that can fall over in the wind. ∙ Avoid bathing during thunderstorms. Also avoid collecting water from taps. Electricity from lightning may travel through the pipe.
  • Do not fish or bath in water bodies during thunderstorms. As soon as you see clouds, you should stop activities like fishing and boating and try to reach the nearest shore immediately. Do not stand on the deck of a boat during a thunderstorm. Baiting and netting should be suspended during thunderstorms. 
  • Avoid kite flying. It is dangerous to sit on a terrace or other high place or on a tree branch during a thunderstorm. Domestic animals should not be tied in the open during this time. Do not go when there is a rain cloud to untie them and tie them back securely. This may cause you to experience lightning strikes. 
  • If you are in an open area where you cannot move to a nearby building, keep your feet together and tuck your head and legs between your knees and roll up like a ball. Lightning protection conductor can be placed on top of buildings to protect them from lightning. A surge protector can be fitted for the safety of electrical equipment. 

Lightning strikes can cause burns, hearing loss, and heart attacks. It should be understood that there is no electric current in the body of a person who has been struck by lightning. Thus, do not hesitate to give first aid to a person who has been struck by lightning. The first thirty seconds of being struck by lightning are the golden moments to save lives. Get medical help immediately to the person who has been struck by lightning.

Central Meteorological Department has announced yellow (yellow) alert for the next 5 days of rainfall forecast in various districts. 

  • 05–11–2024: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad 
  • 08–11–2024: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Idukki, Idukki 
  • 09–11–2024: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, 

Yellow alert has been announced in the several districts in Kerala. Chance of isolated heavy rain is forecast. Heavy rains mean rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.
