The drive gained widespread attention after a video of the demolition, featuring a bulldozer in action, went viral. Officials confirmed that the campaign aims to address encroachments hindering public infrastructure.
Electricity Theft Allegations: ₹1.91 Crore Fine Imposed
In a parallel development, the Uttar Pradesh electricity department has accused the Sambhal MP of electricity theft and imposed a fine of ₹1.91 crore. Following an inspection at Rehman's residence, evidence of illegal power usage was reportedly found, leading to the disconnection of electricity supply.
Superintending Engineer Vinod Kumar confirmed the findings: "An electricity inspection drive is ongoing in Sambhal. A fine of ₹1.91 crore has been imposed on the MP, and the power supply to his residence has been disconnected."
The inspection, conducted under heavy security, also resulted in a police case filed under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003. Authorities allege that Rehman and his family bypassed the electricity meter to steal power. Additionally, his father, Mamlukur Rehman Barq, faces charges of threatening officials during the inspection.
Rehman is also among those charged in connection with the November 24 violence in Sambhal, where clashes between locals and security personnel during a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid led to the deaths of four individuals.
The state government’s actions have drawn sharp reactions, with critics alleging a politically motivated crackdown, while officials insist that the measures are part of routine law enforcement and administrative campaigns.
Further updates are awaited as investigations into the electricity theft and encroachment cases progress.
