Car plows into crowd at German Christmas market, terror attack reported
Several people were injured and two people, including a small child, were killed Friday after a car plowed into people at a Christmas market in the eastern German town of Magdeburg, in what local officials are calling a terrorist attack. The city government said 68 people were injured, including 15 people.
According to eyewitnesses, a black BMW drove straight into the crowd at the Christmas market, traveling at a speed of 400 meters in the direction of the town hall. The car then plowed into the crowd.
Videos posted on social media show a dark-colored car driving at high speed into a crowd. Several media outlets have featured the videos in their coverage, but the authenticity of the footage has not yet been officially confirmed. Other videos have emerged showing police grabbing a man and holding him to the ground.
The driver of the car was immediately arrested and identified as Taleb A, a 50-year-old medical doctor from Saudi Arabia. The report indicates that he has been living in Germany since 2006 and that the defendant, a consultant in psychiatry and psychotherapy, was recognized as a refugee in 2016.
