Gukesh Dommaraju: The Youngest Chess World Champion in History

Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju has etched his name in the annals of history by becoming the youngest world chess champion at the age of 18. The Chennai-born sensation defeated defending champion Ding Liren of China in a gripping final round to claim the FIDE World Chess Championship title. With this triumph, Gukesh surpasses the long-standing record of Garry Kasparov, who won the championship at 22 in 1985.

Gukesh’s victory, achieved at the championship held in Singapore, culminated in a dramatic finale. Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai—often referred to as India’s chess capital—Gukesh’s journey to chess stardom began early. His parents, Rajnikanth Dommaraju and Padma Kumari, both medical professionals, introduced him to chess as an after-school activity when he was just seven years old. His extraordinary talent quickly became evident, and he earned the title of grandmaster at the age of 12, making him the second-youngest grandmaster in history at the time.

Despite entering the World Chess Championship as an underdog—ranked fifth globally and second in India—Gukesh displayed unparalleled composure and skill. Reflecting on his victory, he shared in a post-match interview, “I probably got so emotional because I did not expect to win that position.” His humility and tenacity have earned him admiration worldwide.

Gukesh’s victory makes him only the second Indian to win the world title, following the legendary Viswanathan Anand, a five-time champion who has mentored and inspired him. Anand, often hailed as the pioneer of Indian chess, praised Gukesh’s achievement as a proud moment for the nation.
