Hamas announced on Monday that 33 hostages held in Gaza had been killed during the ongoing conflict between the Palestinian militant group and Israel. The group did not specify the nationalities of the deceased and noted that other hostages were missing.
In a statement addressed to Israel, Hamas warned, “With the continuation of your crazy war, you could lose your hostages forever. Do what you have to do before it is too late.” Shortly after, Hamas released a video claiming to document the circumstances of the hostages' deaths, placing responsibility on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli military has not issued an immediate response to Hamas's claims. The announcement comes amid continuing Israeli strikes on Gaza.
Hamas has called for an end to the conflict and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza as a condition for the release of remaining hostages. Netanyahu, however, has reiterated that the military campaign will persist until Hamas is eradicated as a threat to Israel.
The war, triggered by a Hamas-led attack on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the capture of over 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. Since then, Gaza has endured relentless Israeli military strikes, which local officials report have killed more than 44,400 Palestinians and displaced the majority of the enclave’s population, leaving large areas in ruins.
