Inter Milan Secure Hard-Fought 2-0 Victory Over Como to Stay in Serie A Title Race

Inter Milan overcame a resilient Como side with a 2-0 victory on Monday, courtesy of second-half goals from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram. The result ensures Inter remains firmly in the hunt for the Serie A title, keeping them within striking distance of the league leaders.

The win propelled Inter to 37 points, placing them in third position, just three points behind table-toppers Atalanta, who edged Empoli 3-2 on Sunday. Second-placed Napoli, on 38 points, also stayed ahead after their narrow 2-1 victory over Genoa on Saturday. Inter, however, hold a game in hand over both teams, bolstering their title ambitions.

Inter dominated possession in the first half but failed to capitalize on a host of opportunities. Denzel Dumfries missed a golden chance, firing over the bar from close range, while Federico Dimarco’s effort was comfortably saved by Como’s veteran goalkeeper, Pepe Reina. Despite their control, Inter’s inability to convert chances left the scoreline level at halftime, with Como demonstrating defensive resilience.

The breakthrough finally came three minutes into the second half when Carlos Augusto rose to meet a Hakan Çalhanoğlu corner, directing a towering header past Reina at the far post. The Brazilian full-back expressed his delight after the match, telling Sky Italia:

“I'm happy for the goal, but what matters most is the victory. We knew it would be a tough game, but securing the three points was crucial. This season, the league is more competitive, but I have immense confidence in my teammates—they’re the best in the world. We’ll see where we stand at the end of the season.”

Following the goal, Como upped their intensity, creating moments of danger for the visitors. Augusto, who delivered a standout performance, made a crucial interception to deny Edoardo Goldaniga an equalizer, while Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer produced a spectacular save to thwart Nico Paz’s powerful strike.

Inter had opportunities to extend their lead, but their efforts were repeatedly stifled. Captain Lautaro Martinez had a goal disallowed for offside in the 68th minute, further extending his personal goal drought, which now spans over a month.

As the match entered stoppage time, Marcus Thuram secured the victory with a thunderous strike, bringing his season tally to 12 goals. His contribution places him level with Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui at the top of the Serie A scoring charts.

Inter center-back Alessandro Bastoni emphasized the significance of the win given the results of their title rivals earlier in the round.

“Even in matches where we aren’t at our brilliant best, it’s vital to secure the points,” Bastoni stated. “With Atalanta and Napoli already winning, we needed to respond positively and stay in the race.”

The victory highlights Inter’s resilience in a highly competitive Serie A season, where every point is critical. With a game in hand and performances that underline their depth and determination, Simone Inzaghi’s side remains a formidable contender in the pursuit of the Scudetto.
