Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday strongly criticized Maharashtra BJP Minister Nitesh Rane for his controversial "mini-Pakistan" remark, calling it a serious breach of constitutional duty and an affront to India’s foundational values.
In a statement issued from his office, CM Vijayan described Rane’s comments as “highly provocative and condemnable,” asserting that such remarks reflect the ideological stance of the Sangh Parivar toward Kerala. "The Sangh Parivar believes it can isolate territories where its influence is limited by propagating hatred and alienation. This statement is a manifestation of that agenda," said CM Vijayan.
He further demanded that Nitesh Rane resign from his ministerial position, stating, “A minister who makes such hateful and divisive comments is unfit to hold public office. It is alarming that the leadership of the ruling party at the national level has chosen to remain silent on this blatant breach of constitutional principles."
Opposition Voices Demand Accountability
Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, also condemned Rane’s remarks, which included criticisms of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. Satheesan demanded Rane’s resignation, pointing out that similar accusations were earlier voiced by CPI(M) Politburo member A. Vijayaraghavan. Vijayaraghavan had claimed that Rahul Gandhi won the Wayanad constituency with the support of communal forces and alleged extremist participation in Priyanka Gandhi’s campaign events.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K. Sudhakaran accused both the BJP and CPI(M) of orchestrating a joint effort to tarnish Kerala's secular reputation. "Nitesh Rane’s inflammatory comments, based on A. Vijayaraghavan’s earlier statements, clearly reveal a coordinated conspiracy to undermine Kerala's legacy of communal harmony," Sudhakaran stated.
Political Firestorm Over Rane’s Provocative Remarks
Nitesh Rane made the contentious "mini-Pakistan" comment at an event in Pune, alleging that "only extremists in Kerala" support Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi. His remarks have triggered widespread outrage, with opposition leaders across the political spectrum accusing him of spreading hatred and demanding immediate corrective action.
The incident underscores the increasing polarization in political discourse, with calls growing louder for accountability and adherence to constitutional principles among public representatives.
