Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden Pays Tribute to Former Indian PM Manmohan Singh

Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his heartfelt condolences on Saturday over the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, describing him as a "true statesman" and a "kind and humble" leader.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister for two terms, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday. He had been admitted to AIIMS Delhi following a sudden loss of consciousness at home. A statement from the hospital attributed his demise to age-related medical conditions.

Biden Reflects on Singh’s Legacy

In an official statement from the White House, President Biden shared, “Jill and I join the people of India in grieving the loss of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. During this difficult time, we recommit to the vision to which Prime Minister Singh dedicated his life. Jill and I extend our deepest condolences to former First Lady Gursharan Kaur, their children, and the people of India."

Biden highlighted the profound impact of Dr. Singh’s leadership, emphasizing the unprecedented cooperation between the United States and India during his tenure. “From forging the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement to helping launch the first Quad between Indo-Pacific partners, he charted pathbreaking progress that will continue to strengthen our nations—and the world—for generations to come," Biden noted.

Personal Recollections

The U.S. President fondly recalled his interactions with Dr. Singh, first as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2008 and later as Vice President during Singh’s State Visit to the United States in 2009.

“He also graciously hosted me in New Delhi in 2013. As we discussed then, the U.S.-India relationship is among the most consequential in the world. Together, as partners and friends, our nations can unlock a future of dignity and unlimited potential for all our people," Biden said, reaffirming his commitment to the shared vision for the bilateral relationship.

Tributes Pour In

Dr. Singh, remembered as the architect of India’s economic reforms and a distinguished leader, will be laid to rest with full state honors at Nigam Bodh Ghat in New Delhi on Sunday at 11:45 am. The Indian government has declared seven days of national mourning in his honor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the late leader, stating, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders."

Dr. Singh’s transformative economic policies and diplomatic acumen left an indelible mark on India’s trajectory. His legacy as a visionary statesman and a humble leader continues to inspire across generations and borders.
