Polish Cycling Couple Robbed in Pakistan: Incident Raises Concerns Over Tourist Safety

A Polish cycling couple on a world tour was robbed in broad daylight along the Sujawal-Badin bypass in Pakistan on Sunday. The victims, Kowalczyk Jakuo Tomasz and Scantamburlo Mae Elisabeth, were intercepted by three armed muggers who reportedly snatched iPhones, cash, and other valuables before fleeing the scene.

According to the couple, the robbery occurred between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Local reports suggest the duo lost approximately Rs 72,000 along with their bags. The victims had been cycling through Pakistan as part of their journey spanning ten countries, including France, Italy, Bangladesh, India, and Turkey.

Police Response
Inspector Abdul Haq Baran, in charge of the District Intelligence Branch, attributed the incident to a lack of communication, claiming the couple did not inform local authorities of their travel plans. "Had we been informed about their movement, we would have ensured their security," Baran said.

Police have since acquired CCTV footage from a nearby filling station and initiated efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

Concerns Over Tourist Safety
The incident has sparked criticism and concern among cultural and tourism officials. Sarfaraz Ahmed Jatoi, curator of the Makli Necropolis, expressed deep regret over the robbery, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures for both citizens and international tourists.

“Such incidents not only cause distress and financial loss to the victims but also tarnish Pakistan’s global image,” Jatoi said. He called for heightened security, particularly for visitors exploring Sindh’s archaeological and heritage sites.

Former Director General of the Culture and Tourism Department, Dr. Mohammad Ali Manjhi, echoed similar sentiments. He lamented the recurring security lapses in Thatta and Sujawal districts, urging authorities to prioritize the protection of tourists and researchers visiting the region’s historic landmarks.

Before the robbery, the couple had shared positive experiences about their travels in Pakistan, particularly praising the hospitality of the Sindh people. They had stayed at the Archaeology Guest House in Thatta the previous night and expressed excitement about exploring the region’s unique cultural and archaeological heritage.

Despite this setback, the couple is continuing their world tour and is en route to India. The incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols to protect tourists and preserve Pakistan’s reputation as a welcoming destination for international travelers.
