Dublin: Incumbent Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris has officially resigned from his position as taoiseach ahead of the first sitting of the new Dáil.
There are indications that a new government will be formed in Ireland with the support of independents. As the first meeting of the newly elected 34th parliamentarians is scheduled to take place in the Dáil today, it is reported that the Fine Gael and Fine Gael parties have reached an agreement on the speaker. Independent TD Verona Murphy is expected to be the speaker. The parliamentary committees of both parties have reportedly reached an agreement on this.
Following last month's general election, TDs (Members of Parliament) in Ireland will hold their first sitting of Parliament today. The first vote will be for the Speaker.
The outgoing Speaker, Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Feargail, is seeking re-election, having been elected as a TD for Kildare South in the Irish Party Final election. Although he had previously said he would not seek a third term as Speaker, Feargail was seeking re-election after being unable to accept the bargaining politics of the Independents.
But he is running against fellow Fianna Fail TD John McGuinness, while his party and Fine Gael will not support him, instead urging TDs to support independent TD Verona. Murphy's bid to form a government with the regional group of independents is part of a bid to form a government, leaders Martin and Harris explained at the meeting.
The nomination period for the Speaker's post ended yesterday evening. Currently, four people, including Murphy, are in the running. The person elected as Speaker will automatically be re-elected in the next election. However, there is doubt as to who will have the upper hand in the secret ballot.
