US Airstrike Targets Iran-Backed Command Center in Yemen

American forces have conducted a precision airstrike on a “key command and control facility” allegedly operated by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Houthi-controlled Sanaa, Yemen, according to a statement by US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Monday.

The targeted site was identified as a hub for coordinating Houthi operations, including recent attacks on US Navy warships and merchant vessels in the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. CENTCOM emphasized that the strike reflects Washington’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding US and coalition personnel, regional partners, and the security of international shipping routes.

Rising Tensions in the Region

The strike comes amidst escalating tensions in the region, fueled by Houthi missile and drone attacks. Earlier on Monday, the Houthi movement claimed to have launched a hypersonic ballistic missile at Tel Aviv, an incident the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed was intercepted without casualties.

The Houthis, a Yemeni Shia group, have recently targeted Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and extended their operations to include US- and UK-linked vessels, framing these actions as acts of solidarity with Palestinians amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.

US Naval Interventions

In response to Houthi aggression, US naval forces have been actively defending commercial shipping in the region. Last week, the US Navy repelled an attack on vessels in the Gulf of Aden. The USS Stockdale and USS O’Kane destroyed unmanned aerial systems and an anti-ship cruise missile on December 9-10, ensuring the safety of civilian ships and crew. Similar incidents occurred on November 13 when US Navy vessels intercepted Houthi-launched drones and missiles in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

These actions are part of Operation Prosperity Guardian, a mission initiated last year to counter Houthi attacks on international shipping.

Recent Strikes and Ongoing Operations

US forces have intensified airstrikes against Houthi targets in recent weeks. Last month, American forces targeted weapons depots allegedly used for attacks on ships off Yemen’s coast. On December 15, Houthi-run Al-Masirah television reported fresh US and British airstrikes on Yemen’s Hodeidah province, a region housing critical infrastructure, including an international airport and three major ports.

While CENTCOM has yet to comment on these latest reports, the strikes on Hodeidah underscore the strategic importance of the area and the sustained international effort to curtail Houthi operations that threaten regional stability.

The situation highlights the growing complexity of conflicts in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, as the US and its allies remain committed to countering threats to global maritime security and regional peace.
