Delhi Assembly election will take place in a single phase on February 5, 2025: Election Commission

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Tuesday that the Delhi Assembly election will take place in a single phase on February 5, 2025, with vote counting scheduled for February 8. Following the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into effect.

Parties in the Fray

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seeking a third consecutive term, faces a strong challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which aims to unseat Arvind Kejriwal's government. The Congress party, contesting independently this time after partnering with AAP in the last Lok Sabha elections, has also entered the race.

Historical Context

In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, the schedule was announced on January 6, polling occurred on February 8, and the votes were counted on February 11. The AAP secured a decisive victory in that election.

Campaign Highlights

AAP’s campaign is being spearheaded by its national convener Arvind Kejriwal, who recently stepped down as Chief Minister following his release on bail in a corruption case. Kejriwal remains confident, asserting that his party will secure a favorable verdict in what he described as the “people’s court.”

Electorate Details

Delhi's electoral roll, published by the Chief Electoral Officer, includes over 1.55 crore registered voters. This tally features 2.08 lakh first-time voters aged 18–19, highlighting the growing involvement of young electors in shaping the city-state's future.

As Delhi gears up for its high-stakes assembly election, the political landscape is set for intense campaigns and pivotal electoral battles in the coming weeks.
