Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has claimed that Tehran offered to formally codify its renunciation of nuclear weapons during a high-stakes meeting with U.S. officials, but the proposal was rejected. According to Araghchi, the U.S. delegation, led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and entrepreneur Jared Kushner, declined the offer because they were unable to grasp the technical nuances of the Iranian proposal. Writing on the social media platform X, Araghchi emphasized that "factual knowledge matters" in these delicate negotiations.
The exchange occurred during the third round of Oman-mediated talks in Geneva on February 26, 2026. These discussions, which reportedly lasted several hours in an "intensive and serious" atmosphere, were intended to bridge the deep divide between the two nations' nuclear policies. Despite the diplomatic effort, the talks highlighted a significant disconnect, as Washington reportedly demanded the total dismantling of three major nuclear facilities and the transfer of all enriched uranium to U.S. soil.
In response to these demands, Iranian state media has reiterated that Tehran remains committed to its "red lines." While the Foreign Minister has expressed a willingness to provide formal guarantees against weaponization, the Iranian government has refused to cease domestic nuclear fuel production or reduce its uranium enrichment to zero. This technical impasse remains the primary obstacle as both sides prepare for further consultations at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna.
