New Delhi: Tenants in Delhi, currently excluded from the city's free electricity and water schemes, will be brought under these benefits if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secures another term in the upcoming 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. This assurance was made by AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday, as the party intensifies its campaign for the high-stakes election.
Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal addressed grievances raised by tenants across the capital, stating, “Wherever I go, I meet people living on rent who tell me that while they benefit from improved schools and healthcare facilities, they remain deprived of free electricity and water schemes. We will ensure that after the elections, tenants, many of whom hail from the Purvanchal region, also enjoy these benefits.”
Key Poll Promises
The AAP has announced a series of ambitious initiatives aimed at securing voter support:
- A ₹2,100 monthly honorarium for women.
- Free healthcare services for senior citizens.
- ₹10 lakh insurance coverage for auto drivers.
- Financial assistance for Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to hire private security guards.
These proposed measures will complement the existing programs launched under the AAP’s administration, including revamped government schools, mohalla clinics, and free electricity provisions for residents.
Election Timeline
Voting for all 70 Delhi assembly seats is scheduled for February 5, with the counting of votes set for February 8. The election pits AAP against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress, both striving to prevent AAP from securing a third consecutive term.
Key election deadlines include:
- Last date for filing nominations: January 17.
- Scrutiny of nominations: January 18.
- Last date for withdrawal of nominations: January 20.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar announced that the single-phase election would be held on a weekday, February 5, to encourage higher voter turnout, as previously observed in Maharashtra. The entire election process will conclude by February 10.
Voter List Integrity
Responding to allegations of voter list tampering, CEC Rajiv Kumar reiterated that no voter deletions occur without extensive documentation, field verification, and providing the individual an opportunity to appeal.
As the election approaches, AAP’s promise to extend its flagship schemes to tenants reflects its focus on inclusive governance, aiming to consolidate its voter base across diverse demographics in the capital.
