Mumbai Police have arrested the primary suspect in the stabbing case of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The accused, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad, was apprehended in Thane's Labour Camp area early on Sunday. Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national, had reportedly been working as housekeeping staff at Ricky’s Bar in Thane, using the alias Vijay Das to evade detection.
According to police reports, Shehzad moved to Mumbai four to five months ago. Following his arrest, he was produced in court and has been remanded to police custody for five days to facilitate further investigation.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred on January 16 at approximately 2:30 a.m. at Saif Ali Khan’s residence in Bandra West. During an alleged robbery attempt, the actor was attacked and stabbed six times, sustaining injuries to his neck and shoulder. Khan was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where surgeons conducted a five-hour procedure to remove a 2.5-inch blade fragment lodged in his spine.
Saif Ali Khan remains hospitalized but is reportedly recovering well. His sister, Soha Ali Khan, expressed gratitude for the support and well-wishes received from fans, stating, "We are very happy that he is recovering well, and we feel very blessed that it wasn’t worse."
Ongoing Investigation
Police informed the court that the suspect had entered the actor’s residence with the intent to rob and later attacked him. Investigators have already recovered two parts of the knife used in the assault—one from the crime scene and another from the actor’s wound. Efforts are ongoing to locate a third piece of the weapon.
Additional evidence, such as the clothes worn by the accused at the time of the attack, also needs to be recovered. Authorities are working to trace the suspect’s movements, including his arrival in Mumbai and any potential accomplices.
Legal Proceedings
During the court hearing, police emphasized the need for custodial interrogation to gather more evidence. They stated, "The accused is ruthless, having stabbed Saif Ali Khan multiple times. We need to recover the missing weapon piece, the clothes he was wearing, and investigate his background thoroughly."
The court granted the police custody of the accused, citing the early stage of the investigation and the need for extensive evidence collection. It remarked, “The allegations are well-founded, and the custodial interrogation is justified.”
Public and Media Response
The case has drawn significant public attention, with videos of the suspect’s court appearance circulating widely. Fans and industry colleagues continue to send their prayers and support to Saif Ali Khan as he recovers from this traumatic incident.
Further updates on the case are awaited as investigations progress.
