Thrissur: A wild elephant with a head injury was successfully sedated by an expert team led by Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Arun Zachariah of the Kerala Forest Department in Athirappilly, Thrissur district. After an exhaustive search spanning two days, the elephant was located within a rubber plantation at Kalady Estate on Friday morning.
The
elephant, which had separated from its herd earlier in the day, was found in a
manageable condition, enabling the team to administer sedation safely and
effectively. The operation was carried out with precision to minimize stress on
the animal, ensuring its well-being.
Comprehensive Search Operation
Efforts
to locate the injured elephant began on Thursday, but it could not be spotted
despite extensive ground searches. On Friday, the search was intensified with
the use of drones and a 20-member team led by Dr. Zachariah. The team included
veterinary experts Dr. David Abraham, Dr. Binoy C. Babu, and Dr. Mithun, who
worked in coordination to ensure the animal’s safety.
Preliminary Observations
Initial
observations suggest the elephant has not suffered severe health issues, as it
was feeding and traveling across several kilometers. However, a detailed
examination following sedation is required to fully assess the nature and
severity of its head injury.
Expertise and Commitment
This
successful intervention underscores the dedication and expertise of wildlife
conservation teams in managing such complex scenarios. Dr. Zachariah and his
team will continue to monitor the elephant closely and provide necessary care,
ensuring its recovery and reintegration into the wild.
This incident highlights the critical role of technology, teamwork, and veterinary expertise in addressing wildlife emergencies and safeguarding animal welfare.
