Mallikarjun Kharge Urges Approval of Key Proposals for Central University of Karnataka

New Delhi [India]: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, seeking prompt approval of critical proposals for the development of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) in Kalaburagi.

In his letter dated January 23, Kharge highlighted the university’s pivotal role as an educational hub for students from Karnataka and neighboring states, emphasizing its contribution to addressing educational disparities and fostering development opportunities.

“The Central University of Karnataka serves as an education hub not only for Kalaburagi and the seven districts of the Kalyana Karnataka region but also for the state and neighboring areas. The University is vital in bridging educational gaps and creating growth opportunities,” Kharge wrote.

Focus on Equitable Development

Kharge underscored the importance of institutions like CUK in driving sustainable development and bridging regional disparities, particularly in the Kalyana Karnataka region, which enjoys special status under Article 371-J of the Constitution.

“This special status aims to promote equitable development by addressing the unique challenges of the region and empowering its people. Education, as a cornerstone of progress, is critical for ensuring a brighter future for the coming generations,” he stated, adding that sustained support from the Central government is essential to enhance the university’s infrastructure and academic offerings.

Pending Proposals Await Approval

Kharge pointed out three key proposals awaiting approval from the Government of India, which he deemed critical to the university's progress:

  1. Sanctioning new postgraduate departments.
  2. Approval of teaching positions.
  3. Financing from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) for constructing hostels and other essential infrastructure.

Call for Urgent Action

Kharge appealed for the Education Minister’s intervention to expedite the approval of these proposals, stressing their significance for the development of the Kalyana Karnataka region and the upliftment of students from underprivileged and underdeveloped areas.

“Given the importance of these initiatives, I request your urgent intervention in this matter. I urge you to instruct the concerned officials to expedite the approval of these proposals on a priority basis,” Kharge concluded.

The proposals, if approved, are expected to enhance the university's role as a transformative force in fostering growth and addressing regional disparities.
