In a fierce critique of the BJP-led central government, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the ruling party of pushing a divisive agenda fueled by religious fundamentalism, undermining constitutional values, and fostering inequality in Indian society. Kharge’s statements came as he extended his Republic Day wishes to citizens while reflecting on the nation's 75 years of constitutional democracy.
Kharge emphasized the sacrifices of India's freedom fighters and architects of the Constitution, including Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and highlighted the contributions of farmers, laborers, soldiers, scientists, and cultural icons in nation-building. However, he lamented the current political climate, which he claimed is marked by authoritarianism and a departure from constitutional principles. My dear fellow citizens,
On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I extend my warm Republic Day wishes to each one of you.
This year, we complete 75 years of adopting the conscience keeper and soul of the Indian Republic – the Constitution of India.

"Erosion of Institutions and Federalism"
The Congress President alleged that autonomous institutions are being subjected to political interference, with federalism being undermined and the rights of opposition-governed states curtailed. “The ruling party has unleashed a continuous degradation of our institutions, built carefully over decades. Federalism is being trampled on a daily basis,” Kharge said, pointing to the reduced independence of Parliament and universities.
He also criticized a section of the media, alleging it has been turned into a propaganda tool for the government, while dissenting voices are being silenced through "witch-hunts" against opposition leaders.
"Hate-Fueled Agenda and Social Divisions"
Kharge accused the government of promoting an agenda that fosters societal divisions and marginalizes minorities. "A vicious, hateful agenda immersed in religious fundamentalism has sought to divide our society. Minorities are being targeted, and secular voices tarnished through propaganda," he stated. He added that atrocities against Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes have risen alarmingly, with the ongoing unrest in Manipur serving as a glaring example of government inaction.
"Economic Inequality and Cronyism"
Highlighting growing economic disparities, Kharge criticized the government’s alleged favoritism toward "crony billionaire friends," asserting that they have been handed control of national resources. He expressed concern over the exodus of affluent citizens and rising taxation, which he said has burdened the middle and lower classes.
“The government practices pseudo-nationalism, using disadvantaged youth as carriers of religious supremacy without addressing their unemployment,” he remarked.
Call to Action: Preserve Constitutional Ideals
In his address, Kharge urged citizens to uphold the Constitution's core principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, describing them as the bedrock of India's democracy. "Be ready to make every sacrifice to protect the Constitution. This will be the true tribute to our ancestors," he said, calling for a united stand against the “One Nation, One Party” ideology he attributed to the ruling government.
Kharge concluded his address with a heartfelt appeal: "Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Samvidhaan. Jai Hind."
