Twist in Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Case: Arrested Suspect's Fingerprints Fail to Match Crime Scene Evidence

In a significant turn of events in the Saif Ali Khan attack case, fingerprint evidence collected from the actor's residence does not match those of Shariful Islam Shehzad, the Bangladeshi national arrested for the alleged attack. The revelation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) raises serious questions about the ongoing investigation.

CID Report Contradicts Arrest

According to a report, the CID tested 19 fingerprint samples taken from the crime scene and confirmed that none matched Shariful's prints. This development has created a setback for the Mumbai Police, amid growing speculation on social media that the wrong individual may have been apprehended.

Shariful, arrested after a three-day manhunt involving approximately 40 teams from the Mumbai Police and Crime Branch, was taken into custody in Thane. The new evidence now casts doubt on whether the arrested individual is the same person seen in the CCTV footage of Saif’s building.

Discrepancies in Investigation

Sources cited by Mid-Day revealed that the CID’s fingerprint bureau confirmed the mismatch through a system-generated report, which was sent to the CID Superintendent in Pune. Despite this, Shariful remains in custody, adding to questions about the robustness of the investigation.

The Mumbai Police’s Zone 6 team, led by DCP Navnath Dhavale, reportedly had limited information about the case when they apprehended Shariful. The investigation was originally being handled by the Zone 9 team before the suspect was transferred to Bandra Police, which oversees the jurisdiction of the incident.

Facial Recognition Under Scrutiny

Further complicating the case, the facial recognition report used to identify Shariful is now under review. Initial CCTV footage from Saif’s residence was too blurred to enhance through technological means, leading investigators to rely on a facial recognition system from the Western Railway. However, the report’s findings have been called into question as they appear inconsistent with the appearance of the individual captured exiting the building.

Impact on Investigation

The latest revelations are expected to intensify scrutiny on the investigation, particularly as Saif Ali Khan underwent a six-hour surgery following the January 16 attack. Questions over the identification and arrest process highlight challenges in ensuring accuracy in high-profile cases.

The Mumbai Police and CID are now under pressure to reassess the evidence and address the discrepancies to restore confidence in the investigation process. Further updates are awaited as the case unfolds.
