KOLKATA: A Kolkata court on Saturday found Sanjay Roy guilty in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The verdict, delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah Court, comes 57 days after the in-camera trial commenced on November 12.
The court announced that the quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Monday. The judge, addressing Roy, stated, “You must be punished,” citing forensic evidence that conclusively placed Roy’s DNA at the crime scene and on the victim.
Judge's Observations
In delivering the verdict, Judge Das highlighted the severity of the crime. “The way you throttled the victim, you can be given death or imprisonment,” he remarked. The court referred to relevant legal provisions, including Section 64, which prescribes a minimum of 10 years imprisonment, and Section 66, which carries a penalty of up to 25 years, life imprisonment, or the death sentence.
Sanjay Roy’s Defense
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, maintained his innocence in court, claiming he was framed. “I have not done this. Those who are truly responsible are walking free,” Roy said, despite having initially confessed to the crime.
Evidence Presented
In its 45-page chargesheet filed last October, the CBI detailed forensic findings linking Roy to the crime. Bloodstains matching the victim’s were discovered on his jeans and shoes. Additional evidence, including Roy’s hair and a Bluetooth earpiece synced to his cellphone, was recovered from the crime scene.
Political Reactions
The verdict drew comments from the Trinamool Congress, which accused some groups of using the case for personal agendas. “Certain individuals misled the public and questioned the pace of justice, but the investigation has been thorough. Everyone had their day in court, and the process remains ongoing,” the party said in a statement.
Case Background
The incident occurred on August 9 last year when the lifeless body of a postgraduate medical trainee was discovered in a seminar room at RG Kar Hospital. Sanjay Roy was arrested the following day. While investigators maintained that Roy acted alone, the victim’s family and junior doctors’ groups have raised suspicions of a larger conspiracy.
Nationwide Impact
The brutal crime shocked the nation and sparked protests across the country, with demands for stronger workplace safety measures for medical professionals. The verdict marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victim.
Further developments are expected as the court announces the sentencing on Monday.
