New Delhi: Addressing the joint sitting of Parliament at the commencement of the Budget Session, President Droupadi Murmu on Friday underscored the government's commitment to modernizing the agriculture sector, enhancing farmers' income, and achieving self-reliance in food production.
She noted that India recorded an all-time high foodgrain production of 322 million tonnes in 2023-24, reflecting the sector’s resilience and progress.
"Our aim is to achieve modernization and self-reliance in the agriculture sector. The government is dedicated to ensuring better returns for farmers and improving their livelihoods," President Murmu stated.
‘Mission Mausam’ to Strengthen Climate Resilience
The President also praised the government’s launch of ‘Mission Mausam’, a major initiative aimed at making India “weather-ready and climate-smart”, which she said will immensely benefit farmers by improving weather forecasting and preparedness.
The government has allocated ₹2,000 crore for the implementation of this mission, she said.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 14, as part of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) 150th foundation day celebrations, ‘Mission Mausam’ seeks to enhance weather observation networks, improve forecasting models, and integrate advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Tribal Welfare: A Key Government Priority
President Murmu, India's first tribal head of state, reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to the welfare of Dalits, tribals, and underprivileged communities, stating that these groups had been overlooked for decades after Independence.
"Our tribal communities were ignored for decades, but my government has given top priority to their welfare," she emphasized.
She highlighted that government initiatives have significantly benefited marginalized communities, providing them with better access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
The President’s address set the tone for the Budget Session, outlining key policy priorities, including agricultural reforms, climate resilience, and social equity, which are expected to shape legislative discussions in the coming weeks.
