Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel today, marking a historic leap forward in infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir. The 6.4 km-long tunnel, built at an estimated cost of ₹2,700 crore, ensures year-round road connectivity to Ladakh from the Ganderbal district. The tunnel is set to transform Sonamarg into a year-round destination and catalyze economic growth in the region.
Acknowledgment from J&K Leadership
During the inauguration, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised Prime Minister Modi for his leadership and commitment to the region. Referring to remarks made by Modi during International Yoga Day in Srinagar, Abdullah said:
“You said 3 very important things during your program in Srinagar on International Yoga Day. You said that you are working on eliminating Dil ki Doori (differences of hearts) and Dilli ki Doori (distance from Delhi), and this is truly proven by your work. During that time, you had told the people of Jammu and Kashmir that very soon elections will be held and people will get a chance to choose their government through their votes. You kept your word, and within four months, elections were held.”

Abdullah's remarks underscored the Prime Minister's dedication to fostering development, strengthening trust, and ensuring democratic processes in Jammu and Kashmir.
Strategic Significance of the Z-Morh Tunnel
Located on the Srinagar-Sonamarg road, the Z-Morh Tunnel derives its name from its Z-shaped alignment, with “Morh” meaning “turn” in Hindi. The project ensures safe, all-weather connectivity to Ladakh, addressing the region's previous vulnerability to avalanches.
As part of a larger 12-km infrastructure initiative that includes the Zojila Tunnel—expected to be completed by 2028—the project will reduce the travel route from 49 km to 43 km and increase vehicle speeds from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr. This connectivity will improve access to key destinations, including Baltal (Amarnath Cave), Kargil, and other parts of Ladakh, while fortifying defense logistics and fostering socio-economic integration.
Boost to Tourism and Economic Growth
Situated at over 8,650 feet above sea level, the Z-Morh Tunnel is set to make Sonamarg a year-round destination, boosting winter tourism, adventure sports, and local livelihoods. Enhanced infrastructure is expected to unlock the region’s full potential for trade and tourism.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the transformative potential of the project, stating, “This tunnel is more than just a piece of infrastructure; it is a testament to our commitment to modernizing the region and fostering prosperity.”
Technological Advancements
The Z-Morh Tunnel incorporates state-of-the-art technologies to ensure safe and seamless travel. The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) hailed it as a breakthrough, not just in connectivity but in unlocking new opportunities for the region.
Reflecting on Recent Challenges
The inauguration also comes against the backdrop of a tragic attack on tunnel workers at a camp in Gagangir on October 20, 2024, which claimed seven lives, including six non-local workers and a local doctor. Despite these challenges, the project stands as a symbol of resilience and progress.
Looking Ahead
With the Z-Morh Tunnel now operational and the Zojila Tunnel nearing completion, Jammu and Kashmir is poised for transformative growth. The project promises to strengthen the region’s strategic infrastructure, promote tourism, and deepen trust between the Union Territory and the central government, exemplifying the spirit of eliminating Dil ki Doori and Dilli ki Doori as envisioned by Prime Minister Modi.
