Prime Minister Modi to Inaugurate Sonamarg Tunnel, Boosting Tourism and Connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the highly anticipated Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir on January 13 at approximately 11:45 AM. During his visit, the Prime Minister will also address a gathering and meet the workers who played a crucial role in the construction of the tunnel.

In response to a post by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “I am eagerly awaiting my visit to Sonmarg, Jammu and Kashmir for the tunnel inauguration. You rightly point out the benefits for tourism and the local economy. Also, loved the aerial picturesand videos!” he said.

Earlier, Chief Minister Abdullah had visited the site to review preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit. In his post, Abdullah highlighted the significance of the Z-morh Tunnel, stating that it would open Sonmarg to year-round tourism, develop the region as a major ski resort, and reduce travel time to Kargil and Leh from Srinagar.

About the Sonamarg Tunnel:

The Sonamarg Tunnel is a 12-kilometre-long project with a total cost exceeding Rs 2,700 crore. It comprises the main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and the associated approach roads. Located at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, the tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, ultimately linking to Leh.

One of the key advantages of the tunnel is its ability to bypass landslide-prone and avalanche-affected routes, ensuring safer and uninterrupted access to the strategically important Ladakh region. This will be particularly valuable for defense logistics, facilitating the smoother movement of goods and personnel to the area.

Beyond its strategic importance, the Sonamarg Tunnel is set to transform Sonamarg into a year-round tourism hub. By enabling safe access throughout the winter months, it will enhance adventure tourism, winter sports, and contribute significantly to the local economy.

The Sonamarg Tunnel is part of a larger infrastructure initiative that includes the Zojila Tunnel, expected to be completed by 2028. Once both tunnels are operational, they will drastically improve connectivity, reducing the distance between Srinagar and Leh from 49 km to 43 km, while increasing travel speed from 30 km/h to 70 km/h. This will not only make travel more efficient but also strengthen economic integration between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
