Remains of Fallen Soldier Returned to Israel After Nearly a Decade

Israel successfully recovered the remains of Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul, nearly a decade after his death during Operation Protective Edge in 2014. The operation, carried out by the Shin Bet (ISA) and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), took place shortly before a ceasefire with Hamas.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the mission, stating, “In a special operation by the ISA and IDF, we have returned the body of Golani soldier Oron Shaul, of blessed memory, to Israel.” He extended his condolences to the Shaul family, describing them as "very dear," and lauded the courage and expertise of the forces involved.

Netanyahu reflected on his personal commitment to the soldiers lost in the 2014 conflict: “The photos of Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, of blessed memory, have been in my office for years, serving as a constant reminder of my duty to bring them home. Last night, we fulfilled the mission of bringing Oron back to Israel.” He emphasized Israel’s ongoing efforts to secure the return of Hadar Goldin and other hostages, whether living or deceased.

The IDF confirmed that the operation involved specialized units conducting a covert mission within Gaza. Oron Shaul, a member of the Golani Brigade, fell in combat on July 20, 2014, during a battle in Shejaiya, after which his body was taken by Hamas.

The recovery mission involved years of intelligence collection by the Hostages and Missing Persons Unit and the Special Operations Unit within the IDF's Intelligence Directorate. After the operation, the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Military Rabbinate confirmed the identification of Oron’s remains. Early Sunday morning, the Shaul family was informed of the successful mission.

In a joint statement, the IDF and ISA expressed their condolences to the Shaul family and reaffirmed their commitment to bringing home all Israeli hostages. “Our mission is not complete. We will continue working tirelessly to bring every captive and fallen soldier back to Israel,” the statement read.
