The actor was attacked by a Bangladeshi national on January 16 and underwent surgery at Lilavati Hospital. He is expected to be discharged today. Saif’s sister, Saba, provided updates on Instagram, revealing that the incident brought back memories of their father’s cricket injuries. She also shared that she recently fractured her finger.
Police have recorded the statement of Saif’s wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, and are expected to take the actor’s statement post-discharge. Meanwhile, the accused was taken to the Bandra West residence for a crime scene recreation as part of the ongoing investigation.
The attacker, identified as Shariful Islam Shehzad from Jhalokathi district, Bangladesh, had been residing in Mumbai illegally under the alias Vijay Das. Police investigations revealed that Shehzad, employed through a housekeeping agency, had been in the city for over five months.
The attack took place at Khan’s apartment in the Satguru Sharan building. Shehzad allegedly scaled the building to access the 11th-floor bathroom window in the actor’s son Jehangir’s room, which lacked a protective grill. After attacking Khan, the accused was locked in a room by female staff but managed to escape by climbing down to the 10th floor and fleeing through the stairwell.
Preliminary findings indicate a significant lapse in response from the household staff. Despite the presence of four male workers in the house during the attack, none intervened, with one even taking refuge within the residence. Police emphasized that swift action from the staff could have prevented the stabbing.
A team of Mumbai Police continues to investigate the case, with the Chief Minister also calling for accountability and ensuring the safety of high-profile residents.
