VIRUDHUNAGAR & COIMBATORE, TAMIL NADU: In a tragic turn of events, six workers lost their lives in an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Virudhunagar on Saturday. According to official reports, the blast occurred during the mixing of chemicals, flattening at least one room and resulting in multiple casualties. Fire and rescue teams swiftly responded to the site to contain the situation and initiate recovery operations.
In a separate incident in Coimbatore, an LPG tanker overturned on the Avinashi Road flyover in the early hours of Friday, leading to a minor gas leak. The tanker detached from its truck while negotiating a roundabout. While no injuries were reported, the accident caused a temporary halt to traffic in the central part of the city.
As a precaution, schools within a radius of 500 meters to one kilometer from the accident site were closed for the day. Fire and rescue personnel acted promptly, spraying water on the tanker, which was transporting 18 tonnes of LPG to a Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) bottling plant in Ganapathy, Coimbatore.
Authorities are conducting investigations into both incidents to ascertain the causes and ensure safety measures are strengthened to prevent such occurrences in the future.
