Guneri Village Declared Gujarat’s First Biodiversity Heritage Site

Gandhinagar (Gujarat): In a landmark move for environmental conservation, the Gujarat Biodiversity Board has officially designated the ‘Inland Mangrove Guneri’ site in Guneri village, Lakhpat taluka, Kutch district, as Gujarat’s first-ever ‘Biodiversity Heritage Site’ (BHS). The announcement, made under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Forest and Environment Minister Mulubhai Bera, underscores the state’s commitment to preserving unique ecological habitats.

A Unique Mangrove Ecosystem

Unlike conventional mangrove ecosystems that thrive in tidal waters, the Guneri mangroves, located 45 km from the Arabian Sea and 4 km from Kori Creek, present a rare ecological phenomenon. The 32.78-hectare site stands out as an inland mangrove forest growing on flat terrain without the presence of tidal water inflow, swamps, or muddy conditions. This exceptional biodiversity hotspot significantly enhances the ecological identity of Kutch and sets a precedent for conservation efforts in non-traditional mangrove environments.

Government’s Commitment to Conservation

The Gujarat government, acting on the recommendation of the Gujarat Biodiversity Board, aims to protect and enhance the unique flora and fauna of this site through a structured management plan. The initiative aligns with the state's broader biodiversity conservation strategy while ensuring that the rights and privileges of local communities remain safeguarded.

Community Involvement & Capacity Building

To strengthen conservation efforts, the state government has also planned capacity-building training programs for local residents, forest department personnel, and indigenous forest communities. These initiatives will empower local stakeholders and integrate them into biodiversity preservation activities.

A Milestone for Kutch & Gujarat

Kutch, already renowned for its rich cultural heritage and ecological diversity, has now added another significant achievement to its portfolio. The declaration of Guneri as Gujarat’s first BHS not only reinforces the region’s environmental significance but also marks an important step in India’s ongoing efforts to safeguard unique natural habitats.

With the dedicated efforts of the Gujarat Biodiversity Board and support from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Minister Mulubhai Bera, and Minister of State Mukesh Patel, the Guneri Biodiversity Heritage Site is set to become a model for conservation and a symbol of sustainable environmental stewardship.
