Delhi: Sixteen people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at New Delhi railway station on Saturday as thousands of people gathered to board three trains bound for Prayagraj to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela.
The passengers who died in the tragedy were on their way to attend the Kumbh Mela. Two special trains had been arranged for the Kumbh Mela. There was a huge rush and rush before the trains reached the platform.
Officials said the stampede occurred because railway officials blocked the steps of platform number 14 and platform number 15 to control the crowd.
Many people, including women, collapsed, some suffocated and fell unconscious. Many others were injured after falling. They were taken to a nearby hospital. Fifteen of them have now been confirmed dead. Two children are among the deceased. Ten of them are reportedly women.
It is suspected that the passengers arrived without tickets and an investigation has been launched to find out how they arrived. According to media reports, there was a suffocation-like situation due to the stampede and some passengers were sent for treatment. The incident took place around 8:00 pm. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock over the death of 16 passengers in a stampede at a railway station. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his condolences.
