AIADMK Urges Probe into IPS Officer's Allegations on Police Recruitment Irregularities

Chennai, India – AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami has called upon the Tamil Nadu government to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the allegations raised by senior IPS officer Kalpana Nayak regarding irregularities in police recruitment. Palaniswami also urged the state administration to take stringent legal action following Nayak’s assertion that an attempt was made on her life for exposing discrepancies in the recruitment process.

In a social media post, Palaniswami expressed deep concern over the alleged incident, labeling it a serious blot on the police department, which falls under the jurisdiction of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. He emphasized that the ruling DMK government must assume full responsibility for what he termed as a "condemnable and shameful state of affairs."

Kalpana Nayak, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), has alleged that a suspicious fire broke out in her office chamber in July last year, just prior to her arrival, in what she believes was an orchestrated attempt to silence her. She has formally requested an impartial inquiry and has submitted a complaint to Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police (DGP), Shankar Jiwal.

The controversy stems from alleged inconsistencies in the reservation-based selection process overseen by the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) for positions such as Sub-Inspectors, Constables, Jail Warders, and Firefighters. Nayak had submitted a detailed report in March last year highlighting irregularities in the recruitment procedure. Subsequently, the Madras High Court, while adjudicating a related writ petition, directed a revision of the rank list.

According to her complaint, on July 29, a fire erupted at the TNUSRB headquarters in Egmore, Chennai, moments before her scheduled arrival at the office. She was cautioned by an official against entering the premises, but by then, she was already in close proximity. Upon reaching the site, she discovered that her office chair had been completely burned—an incident she described as both shocking and deeply distressing. Nayak asserted that had she arrived earlier, her life could have been in jeopardy. Notably, the fire occurred on the very day she was set to review and rectify discrepancies in the rank list.

While an initial inquiry attributed the fire to a short circuit in the air-conditioning system, Nayak has raised concerns over the absence of any action against individuals involved, even 15 days after the incident. She subsequently escalated her complaint to the Chief Secretary, the Home Secretary, and the Police Commissioner. Furthermore, she alleged that a revised rank list was published on the TNUSRB website without her scrutiny or approval, just a day after the fire incident.

Despite the passage of six months, Nayak claims that there has been no significant progress in the investigation. She has reiterated her demand for a transparent and impartial probe into the matter. However, the investigative team has stated that there is no concrete evidence to support allegations of deliberate sabotage in the fire incident.

The allegations have sparked widespread concerns over transparency in police recruitment and the safety of whistleblowers within the system. As calls for accountability grow, the Tamil Nadu government faces increasing pressure to ensure a fair and thorough investigation into the claims made by the senior IPS officer.
