Dehradun (Uttarakhand), February 28: More than 55 workers were trapped under snow following an avalanche near Badrinath Dham on the National Highway in Uttarakhand after heavy snowfall, officials confirmed on Friday.
The incident occurred on the highway connecting Mana to Ghastoli, where a total of 57 workers employed by a private contractor for road construction were caught in the avalanche. Rescue teams from the administration and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) promptly responded, successfully rescuing 16 workers. Efforts are currently underway to evacuate the remaining 41, according to Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Suman.
The avalanche was triggered by the collapse of a glacier into a river following 48 hours of continuous heavy snowfall. Construction sites in the vicinity have suffered extensive damage due to the incident.
Authorities have issued alerts to residents in the region, warning of potential risks and urging caution. Additionally, an avalanche warning has been issued for several higher-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
The local government and disaster management teams have advised residents to refrain from traveling to higher altitudes, take necessary precautions, and avoid avalanche-prone zones.
Further updates on the situation are awaited as rescue efforts continue.
