Washington D.C., February 15, 2025 – United States President Donald Trump on Thursday dismissed allegations of U.S. "deep state" interference in Bangladesh's internal affairs and urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address questions on the matter.
"There was no role for our deep state. This is something the Prime Minister has been working on for a long time. Frankly, I've been reading about it, and I will leave Bangladesh to the Prime Minister," Trump stated during a press briefing at the White House following bilateral discussions with Modi.
India’s Stance on Bangladesh’s Political Instability
The political turmoil in Bangladesh, particularly following the collapse of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024, has strained India-Bangladesh relations. Diplomatic tensions have also surfaced over border security and other bilateral disputes.
Addressing the media after the Modi-Trump meeting, India’s Foreign Secretary confirmed that the Bangladesh situation was a key topic of discussion.
"The Prime Minister shared his views and concerns regarding recent developments in Bangladesh and how India perceives the evolving situation," the Foreign Secretary stated. "We hope for stability and constructive engagement between our two nations, but there are challenges, and the Prime Minister conveyed these concerns to President Trump."
In August 2024, a student-led uprising led to the ousting of Sheikh Hasina after weeks of violent protests that claimed over 600 lives. Hasina, 76, sought refuge in India, and an interim administration, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, was subsequently established.
India has since engaged in high-level diplomatic efforts to maintain stability in Bangladesh. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka in December 2024, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to fostering strong bilateral ties.
