Chinese Footballer Guo Jiaxuan Declared Brain Dead Following Training Match Injury

Madrid: Chinese footballer Guo Jiaxuan, a former youth player for Bayern Munich, has been declared brain dead after suffering a severe head injury during a training match in Spain. The 18-year-old defender sustained a critical injury when he was accidentally struck in the face by a teammate’s knee while playing against Spanish club RC Alcobendas in a match organized by the Beijing Football Association.

Guo, who rose through the academy ranks of Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan, also played for Bayern Munich’s youth squad in 2023 as part of the German club’s global talent development initiative. His brother confirmed the tragic news on Chinese social media platform Rednote, stating, "He was rushed to the hospital after the collision, but he was bleeding heavily. Doctors warned us not to expect much."

Despite the devastating prognosis, Guo’s father refused to remove him from life support. The Beijing Football Association initiated efforts to transfer him back to China, with full support from RC Alcobendas. After completing the necessary procedures, Guo was transported to Beijing on Friday.

Guo Jiaxuan was the only Chinese player selected for Bayern Munich’s global youth squad in 2023, a prestigious program aimed at scouting and nurturing young talent from around the world. Born in Beijing in 2006, he also represented China’s U-17 national team, marking him as one of the country’s most promising footballers. His tragic injury has sent shockwaves through the footballing community, highlighting the risks young athletes face on the field.
