Dublin, – A tragic stabbing incident in Dublin’s city center has left one man dead and another injured, prompting renewed calls for increased Garda presence in the capital. The violent altercation occurred around 3:00 AM on South Anne Street, near Grafton Street, a bustling nightlife district.
Emergency services responded swiftly to reports of an altercation and discovered a man in his 30s with severe knife injuries. Despite receiving immediate medical attention at the scene and subsequent transfer to St. James’ Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Another man, also in his 30s, sustained non-life-threatening wounds and is currently recovering in the hospital.
Investigation Underway
The scene has been cordoned off for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. Bloodstains remained visible on the pavement as investigators combed the area for evidence. A murder investigation has been launched, with a Senior Investigating Officer appointed to lead the case. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information, particularly mobile phone or dashcam footage from the vicinity of South Anne Street, Duke Lane Upper, Dawson Street, or St. Stephen’s Green between 2:45 AM and 3:30 AM.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed, “We are investigating all circumstances surrounding this fatal incident. The Office of the State Pathologist and the local Coroner have been notified.”
Impact on Local Businesses
The violent episode has forced the temporary closure of approximately 12 businesses in the area, including Kehoe’s Pub, Xian Street Food, Gotham Café, and Bunsen. Many business owners have voiced frustration over what they perceive as inadequate policing in Dublin’s city center.
Sean Phillips, of Kehoe’s Pub, told RTÉ News, “Saturday is one of our busiest days, and to see blood on the streets in the morning is horrifying. We need more Gardaà patrolling the city.”
Similarly, Ash Thulseepersad, senior manager at Gotham Café, noted that CCTV footage from the night of the incident captured a crowd of roughly 150 people in the area. “I thought this was a safe enough neighborhood, but last night there were drugs and alcohol everywhere—something was bound to happen,” he said.
Political Response and Public Safety Concerns
The attack has reignited concerns over public safety in Dublin, with Labour MEP Aodhán Ó RÃordáin condemning the state of security in the city.
“This is a devastating reminder of how much Dublin has changed—and not for the better,” he stated. “People no longer feel safe here. The Government’s so-called plan to tackle crime, dereliction, and anti-social behavior has yet to be implemented. Where is the follow-through?”
Ó RÃordáin called for “real action, not empty promises,” urging the Government to increase visible policing and address urban dereliction.
Appeal for Witnesses
Gardaà are urging anyone with information to come forward. Those who were in the area at the time or possess relevant footage are encouraged to contact Pearse Street Garda Station at 01 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
As Dublin grapples with another violent crime, the demand for heightened security measures continues to grow. The investigation remains ongoing.
