Thiruvananthapuram – The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] has decided against directly labeling the Narendra Modi-led government as "fascist." This shift in stance was outlined in a confidential document sent by the CPM Central Committee to its state units, revising the draft political resolution previously circulated.

In its earlier position, adopted during the last Party Congress, the CPM had asserted that the Modi government was implementing the fascist agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). However, the latest document introduces a more nuanced approach, incorporating the term "neo-fascism" to describe the evolving political climate. The document differentiates between "classical fascism," referring to the regimes of Mussolini and Hitler, and later forms of fascism, which it classifies as "neo-fascism."
The draft political resolution was prepared ahead of the upcoming Party Congress scheduled for April in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. However, the issuance of a supplementary confidential document refining the party’s stance is considered an unusual move. Traditionally, the CPM has viewed the Modi government as a product of the RSS and applied the "fascist" label accordingly. In contrast, other left-wing parties, including the Communist Party of India (CPI), continue to explicitly describe the Modi administration as a fascist regime.
