Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – At least ten people lost their lives, and 19 others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident on the Prayagraj-Mirzapur highway in the early hours of Saturday. The victims, pilgrims traveling to the Maha Kumbh Mela, were involved in a devastating collision between a car and a bus near the Meja area around 2 a.m., according to local reports.
Citing police sources, Navbharat Times reported that the devotees were en route from Korba district in Chhattisgarh to take a holy dip at Triveni Sangam. Emergency responders swiftly transported the injured to a nearby hospital, while those in critical condition were referred to the district hospital for advanced treatment.
In response to the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to expedite relief operations. "The district administration must ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and extend all necessary support," stated the Chief Minister’s Office, adding that he wished for their speedy recovery.
This tragic incident follows another fatal accident earlier this week in Madhya Pradesh, where a truck collided with a bus carrying pilgrims returning from the Maha Kumbh. The crash, which occurred in Mohla village near Sihora, approximately 40 km from Jabalpur, resulted in the deaths of seven out of nine passengers, with the remaining two sustaining serious injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate both incidents as concerns over road safety for religious pilgrims remain a pressing issue.
