Kottayam: The Gandhi Nagar Police on Tuesday arrested five students from Government Nursing College on charges of ragging first-year students for nearly three months. The accused—second-year general nursing students Samuel Johnson (20) and Jeeva N.S. (19), along with third-year students Rahul Raj K.P. (22), Rijiljith C. (21), and Vivek N.V. (21)—have been suspended by the college administration following the registration of a case under the Prohibition of Ragging Act, 2011.
According to the complaint filed by three first-year students, the seniors subjected them to severe physical and mental abuse, including stripping them, placing dumbbells on their private parts, injuring them with a compass, and pouring lotion on their wounds. The incidents reportedly took place at the men's hostel.
Additionally, the accused extorted ₹800 from the juniors to purchase liquor and cover their personal expenses. The victims were also forced to consume alcohol and threatened with recorded videos to prevent them from reporting the abuse.
The ordeal came to light when one of the victims, who was brutally assaulted on Monday for refusing to pay money, informed his parents. Acting on their advice, the students filed a police complaint, leading to the swift action and subsequent arrests.
Authorities have assured strict enforcement of anti-ragging measures, emphasizing that such offenses will be dealt with severely to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
