A trainee Garda has been arrested on allegations of stealing a wallet from a crime victim while taking a statement at their home, The Irish Mirror has revealed. The incident occurred while the trainee was on placement away from An Garda SÃochána’s training college in Templemore.
The suspect was apprehended after allegedly taking a wallet that contained a GPS tracker, which led to his swift identification and arrest.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed that authorities are investigating the alleged theft at a domestic residence and stated:
“A male has been arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 in relation to this offence. The male was subsequently released without charge, and investigations are ongoing.”
Anti-Corruption Unit Arrests Former Garda in Extortion Probe
In a separate development, detectives from the Anti-Corruption Unit have arrested a former Garda officer as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of extortion by members of a particular unit in Dublin.
The suspect, a man in his 50s, was detained earlier this week at a North Dublin Garda station. He was questioned before being released without charge.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed the arrest, stating:
“As part of an ongoing investigation into the activities of a particular Garda unit based in the Dublin Region, a male in his 50s was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in North Dublin earlier this week. The male was released without charge, and investigations are ongoing.”
Female Garda Arrested for Alleged Harassment of Colleague
These incidents follow the recent arrest of a serving female Garda officer on suspicion of harassing a male colleague over an extended period.
The officer, who holds a supervisory role but is not a senior Garda, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Unit earlier this month.
Sources indicate that the alleged victim, a male Garda, previously worked at the same station as the suspect but has since been transferred to another location. It is alleged that she repeatedly sent letters to his home, targeting both him and his wife.
A source stated:
“The allegation is that she was sending letters to his house, both to him and his wife. She was plaguing him.”
Ongoing Investigations
These arrests highlight the increased scrutiny and accountability measures within An Garda SÃochána, particularly as the Anti-Corruption Unit continues its work to uphold integrity within the force. Investigations into all three cases remain ongoing.
