Limerick Brothers Jailed for Brutal Assault on Former Friend

Two brothers from Limerick, Daragh Hayes (37) and Cian Hayes (33), were sentenced to prison for a violent assault on their former friend, Ciaran Ryan, a former Limerick minor football star. The attack, which took place at Daragh Hayes’ residence in Ballyashea, Kildimo, Co. Limerick, involved the use of a hurley and a steel wrench, leaving Ryan with severe injuries.

Premeditated Attack

The court heard that the Hayes brothers lured Ryan to the house under false pretenses, claiming they wanted to discuss Cian Hayes’ upcoming wedding. Once inside, Ryan was subjected to a sustained and brutal beating based on the brothers’ unfounded suspicion that he had been romantically involved with Daragh Hayes’ ex-partner. The court was presented with evidence that there was no basis for this claim.

Ryan suffered a collapsed lung, multiple fractures—including to his leg, arm, and fingers—and extensive bruising. He recounted in court how the assault had profoundly impacted his life, both physically and emotionally. “I was beaten like they wanted me dead,” Ryan said, describing how he was struck repeatedly by both brothers while struggling to breathe.

Emotional and Psychological Toll

Ryan, a qualified carpenter and owner of a car sales business in Limerick city, detailed the long-term psychological impact of the attack. He described feelings of paranoia, nightmares, and suicidal thoughts, adding that he still fears for his safety. He also spoke about how he and his family have faced social ostracization in their local parish since the incident.

Judge Colin Daly condemned the attack as a “stunningly premeditated” act of violence. He sentenced Daragh Hayes to three years in prison, suspending the final six months, and Cian Hayes to two and a half years, with six months suspended. The brothers had originally been charged with assault causing serious harm, but their guilty pleas to the lesser charge of assault causing harm, along with producing weapons during the attack, were accepted by the court.

Survivor Speaks Out Against Sentencing

Following the sentencing, Ryan expressed disappointment, stating that the penalties were too lenient given the severity of the assault. He compared the sentence to other cases, questioning how similar or lesser offenses had resulted in harsher punishments. “I can’t comprehend how this is justice,” he said, highlighting the severity of his injuries and the risk to his life.

Ryan also criticized the support the Hayes brothers received from sections of their community, including their local GAA club and Cian Hayes’ employer, Regeneron. Despite his ordeal, he expressed gratitude for a letter of support from Kildimo-Pallaskenry GAA Club, acknowledging his contributions as a player.

Evidence and Investigation

Detective Sergeant Michael Reidy of Newcastle West Garda Station described the attack as a “severe beating.” Investigators matched bloodstains on cushions in Daragh Hayes’ home to Ryan’s DNA, which was pivotal in substantiating his allegations.

The court heard that despite realizing their mistake, Daragh Hayes threatened Ryan, warning him against reporting the attack. The brothers even helped Ryan into his car and attempted to straighten his bent car keys, which had been damaged during the assault.

Long-Term Impact

Ryan continues to struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety, saying that he remains haunted by the incident. “A veil of darkness has lingered around me in my local community since the attack,” he stated.

Despite the trauma, Ryan hopes to rebuild his life, though he remains disillusioned by the justice system and the support his attackers have received from some within their community. “I did nothing wrong, yet I feel punished every day,” he concluded.
